Dosing pump for chemical injection into a water-treatment system

A dosing pump can inject antiscalant, sodium bisulfite, coagulant, pH correction chemicals, nutrients, or disinfectants when the chemistry and process are approved. The pump does not “kill bacteria” or “neutralize pH” on its own; the outcome depends on the solution, actual dose, mixing, contact time, water condition, and process control.

What Are the Uses of Dosing Pump?

A dosing pump is used when a process needs controlled, verifiable liquid injection. Water-treatment examples include:

  • antiscalant and dechlorination ahead of reverse osmosis;
  • coagulant or flocculation aid in pretreatment;
  • acid or caustic pH correction in a system designed for those chemicals;
  • sodium hypochlorite or another disinfectant with controlled residual and contact time;
  • nutrients, inhibitors, or process-specific solutions; and
  • cleaning-solution dosing under an approved procedure.

One pump is not automatically compatible with every chemical. Sodium hypochlorite can generate gas and lose strength in storage; acids, caustics, solvents, slurries, or viscous liquids have different material and suction requirements. Obtain the SDS, concentration, density, viscosity, temperature, gas tendency, crystallization, solids, and chemical-compatibility evidence before choosing head, diaphragm, valve ball/seat, tubing, gasket, and injection quill.

How a Dosing Pump Works

In a positive-displacement diaphragm pump, the diaphragm return stroke reduces pressure in the head so the suction check valve opens and liquid enters. The forward stroke increases pressure, closes the suction valve, opens the discharge valve, and pushes liquid to the injection point. The controller changes stroke frequency, stroke length, motor speed, or a design-specific combination.

Milton Roy’s metering-pump principles describe positive displacement with adjustable flow. A fouled check valve, gas in the head, insufficient backpressure, long suction line, or crystallizing solution can still make actual output differ from the setting.

A complete injection system commonly includes:

  1. a labelled day tank or chemical tank with bund and level indication;
  2. a short suction line, suitable foot valve/strainer, and calibration column;
  3. a dosing pump with compatible wetted parts;
  4. pressure relief returning to a safe point rather than a closed isolation valve;
  5. backpressure/antisiphon control where required by the hydraulics;
  6. a pulsation dampener where pulsation affects piping, flowmeters, or process;
  7. a pressure gauge with suitable isolator or diaphragm seal;
  8. an injection valve or quill at a point with adequate mixing; and
  9. flow verification, leak detection, level alarms, or interlocks for the risk.

Do not install an isolation arrangement that can trap pressure between the pump and relief without a design review. Relief discharge must return to a compatible location without exposing operators.

Safe Installation and Startup Sequence

  1. Verify pump model, pressure rating, materials, voltage, signal, manual, and drawing.
  2. Confirm that the chemical tank is labelled, secondary containment is ready, and the SDS is available.
  3. Install the suction line as short and simple as the manual allows; avoid air pockets and unnecessary fittings.
  4. Support tubing/piping independently rather than loading pump-head connections.
  5. Install relief, backpressure, gauge, calibration column, and injection valve in the approved orientation.
  6. Flush and leak-test with a safe medium where the procedure and materials allow.
  7. Prime without standing in front of fittings; use PPE and ventilation required by the SDS.
  8. Test interlocks, alarms, remote signals, fail states, and duty/standby logic.
  9. Calibrate at several settings across the operating range and process pressure.
  10. Record output, stroke/speed, pressure, suction level, signal, and process residual.
