Polypropylene Filter Cartridge Material and Micron Selection
A polypropylene (PP) filter cartridge captures suspended particles as water passes through its fibres or pores; it does not remove dissolved salts or prove that water is safe to drink. Select a cartridge by particle target, nominal or absolute rating, housing dimensions, seal material, flow, temperature, fluid chemistry, and differential-pressure limit—not micron alone.

What data determines polypropylene-cartridge selection?
These six checks prevent a cartridge that looks compatible but does not fit, plugs too quickly, or fails to provide the required particle separation.

One relevant product example is Pentair Pentek Polydepth, which uses thermally bonded polypropylene microfibres and a rigid polypropylene core. Its datasheet, accessed 2 August 2026, lists nominal 1-, 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-micron models in 10-, 20-, 30-, and 40-inch lengths. Those are Polydepth-line data, not default specifications for every PP cartridge.
What does a nominal micron rating mean?
A micron rating states a reference particle size, but nominal does not carry the same capture percentage for every manufacturer. Two products labelled 5 micron may use different media, thickness, test methods, and efficiencies. If the process has a critical particle limit, request an absolute rating or an efficiency curve at the relevant particle size.
The smaller number is not automatically better. Finer media can increase differential pressure and shorten the replacement interval under a high solids load. The better design may use staged filtration—coarse before fine—or a backwashing filter for commercial flow when sediment load and changeout frequency make cartridges uneconomic.

How does a polypropylene cartridge capture particles?
Water moves through a polypropylene network and particles are retained by the media structure. In a depth cartridge, solids can be captured throughout the media thickness rather than only at the surface. Fibre geometry and graded density can increase dirt-holding capacity, but any performance value must come from product data under stated test conditions.
Polypropylene is used across many water applications and appears in constructions such as melt-blown, spun-bonded, PP-component string-wound, or pleated PP cartridges. These constructions are not interchangeable. Confirm every wetted material—media, core, end-cap, adhesive where present, and seal—against the process chemical, temperature, and quality requirements.
Is a PP cartridge suitable for drinking water?
A polypropylene cartridge can provide particle filtration within a drinking-water treatment train, but its material or micron label does not prove that the output is ready to drink. Pentair states that specific Polydepth models meet NSF/ANSI 42 material requirements; that note is not contaminant-removal performance certification and should not be extended to other models.
For drinking-water use, define the source-water quality, controlled hazards, treatment stages, housing sanitation, consumable log, sampling points, and applicable Indonesian requirements. Release water to users only after commissioning, representative sampling, and laboratory verification meet the approved criteria.
How are flow and differential pressure sized?
Cartridge quantity follows design flow and the acceptable hydraulic load per element in the actual fluid. Do not multiply cartridge length by a generic flow number: media construction, micron rating, viscosity, temperature, solids, housing, and differential-pressure target alter the result.
Use the commercial cartridge-housing sizing guide to document normal and peak flow, element count, velocity, clean differential pressure, fouling margin, duty/standby arrangement, and changeout space. A datasheet’s initial pressure-drop curve describes product test conditions; include losses through the housing, valves, and piping in the system calculation.
When should a polypropylene cartridge be replaced?
Replace the cartridge when differential pressure reaches the approved limit, flow or outlet quality misses the target, bypass or damage occurs, or the process hygiene schedule requires it. Record clean differential pressure after installing a new cartridge so later readings have a baseline.
Before opening a housing, isolate flow, release pressure, verify temperature and chemicals, and follow the safe-work procedure. Inspect seals, centre post, spring, sealing knife-edge, housing surface, and cartridge orientation. If the housing leaks after changeout, do not keep tightening without checking O-ring condition, alignment, thread or clamp engagement, and the pressure boundary.

Does a polypropylene cartridge reduce TDS?
No. A PP cartridge is a particle filter. Dissolved solids normally require a process such as RO, nanofiltration, or ion exchange selected for the ions and product-water target.
Is 1 micron always better than 5 micron?
No. A finer rating can increase differential pressure and accelerate plugging. Select from particle size, demonstrated efficiency, solids load, downstream protection, and the intended replacement interval.
What is the difference between nominal and absolute micron?
Nominal and absolute ratings use different manufacturer efficiency definitions. Request the capture percentage, particle size, conditions, and test method before comparing products.
Can one 20-inch cartridge replace two 10-inch cartridges?
